The Bangladesh Protest Archive is a collective effort by students, activists, and citizens who stood in solidarity during the monumental student protests from June 6 to August 5, 2024 that evolved into a national uprising. This movement ultimately led to the downfall of Sheikh Hasina, the longest-serving Prime Minister of Bangladesh, who fled the country in the wake of the protests.
This platform has been created to preserve the memory of the protests, and to protect and categorize videos, audios, and photographs documenting the human rights violations that occurred during this period. The protests began as a response to the reinstatement of a controversial quota system in government jobs, which many believed perpetuated corruption and blocked merit-based government employment opportunities for millions of young people in Bangladesh. The situation escalated as the regime’s violent crackdown on protesters led to widespread outrage, both inside the country and among the diaspora, culminating in Hasina’s resignation and her escape to India in August 2024.
Through this archive, we aim to collect and safeguard evidence of the grave human rights abuses that took place during this period. This material, whether it be original content or material sourced from media outlets and social media, can be instrumental in pursuing justice through formal channels, both within Bangladesh and at the international level.
This archive not only serves as a repository of memories and evidence but also as a tool for accountability, ensuring that the sacrifices made during this critical period in Bangladesh’s history are not forgotten and that those responsible for human rights violations are held accountable.
You are welcome to contribute to this archive.
